Beautiful Female Blue Dashers Look Very Different from Males
As I have mentioned before, there seem to be a lot of blue dashers around this year. I’ve been seeing a lot of them on my own property, but also in other places I’ve been going to hike. As with most dragonflies the blue dasher (Pachydiplax longipennis) or blue pirate was given its common name based on the appearance of the male. And like many other types of dragonflies, the females look much different. Not long ago I posted a photo of a male on my social media pages and asked people if they wanted to see the female. I got an overwhelming response that you did, so here she is. As you can see, where he has turquoise eyes and a primarily blue abdomen, she has red and green eyes and a really pretty golden yellow abdomen. Each one is very attractive in its own way, and they are lovely to have around this summer.
