The Northern Crab Spider is Another Beautiful Little Ambush Hunter
Just like yesterday’s little lynx spider, this northern crab spider (Mecaphesea asperata) is a very small ambush hunter. Unlike the lynx spider, however, this crab spider is a full grown adult that won’t get any larger. The markings on both spiders are striking for us humans to look at, but are designed to help the spider blend into its environment, hiding from potential prey. Crab spiders are so called because of their long front legs and their ability to move in any direction, not just forward and back. They are also very quick. It’s fascinating to watch them hunt. When they decide to make their move, they are on the prey in a fraction of a second, and they rarely miss. They are definitely well adapted to their lifestyle.
