Nature Can Really Turn Up in Some Very Strange Places
You have probably read some place that if you are looking, you can find nature all over the place. And that is definitely true, but some of those places can indeed be rather strange. Back in April, I went outside my office to take a phone call, and when I came back inside and got back to work, I noticed this pretty little forest tent caterpillar (Malacosoma disstria) crawling around on a sheet of paper on our counter top. I’m sure the caterpillar must have gotten on me when I was outside and had fallen off me onto the counter. As you can see, they’re quite colorful, and those colors were emphasized by the white paper it was crawling on. After taking a few photos, I returned the caterpillar back to our yard, where I found several more crawling around on our porch and in the surrounding oak trees. That confirmed my suspicion that the caterpillar had ridden inside on me, but I was glad to be able to rescue it before some dog or cat came along and stepped on it or ate it. Interestingly, even though these are, at least in my opinion, exquisite little caterpillars, the moth that they later become is just a plain, dull brown. It’s too bad, because I would love to see a moth decked out in those striking colors.
