Colorful Little Chipping Sparrows are Migrating Through Florida
You can’t deny that little chipping sparrows (Spizella paserina) are beautiful birds. Every year I look forward to their migration through central Florida. They usually descend on the feeding station in small to medium sized groups and fill up mostly on seeds, although they will also sample the suet. A group usually hangs around for a few days and then continues it’s journey north. In a few days, another group will come through. They seem to be pretty even tempered little birds and get along well with each other and with the other small birds, like the titmice and chickadees, that also come to eat. The last couple of weeks there have been quite a few of them at the feeding station each day. I really enjoy their pretty colors and lovely personalities. I just wish they were around for a little longer.
