The Beautiful Pine Warbler is a Fun Little Visitor
For the past few days I have had a gorgeous little pine warbler (Setophaga pinus) visiting my feeding station. This is a new species to me, but it looks very similar to the palm warblers (Setophaga palmarum) I saw a couple of years ago. So far this year I have only seen this one male, and he may not stay long, but I’m glad to be able to provide him with some high energy, easy to find nutrients. Some of these guys are year round residents and some migrate further north to breed after wintering here. He does sometimes eat a few of the seeds, but he much prefers the suet cakes. He likes to hang around in a nearby oak tree until no body else is near the suet. Then he flies in, sometimes flutters in front of it for a second or two, and then lands. He grabs a few bites and he’s usually off again. He’s very cautious about any movement or even too many other birds being around and he won’t come out of the trees if the woodpeckers or a blue jay is around at all. I’m not sure if he will stay or be on his way again soon, but I’ll enjoy his company for however long he’s here.
