Where Have All the Beautiful Spiders Gone?
It’s the time of year when temperatures are dipping in the northern hemisphere, and even here in sunny Florida the evenings are getting kind of chilly. In fact, my area is predicted to have its first freeze this week. And when the temperatures drop, most of our adult insects either die or go into a state of hibernation. This is one of the many beautiful black and yellow garden spiders (Argiope aurantia) that lived in my yard. They have all laid their eggs now and most have passed away. The few that haven’t, if there are any, won’t survive the freeze. I’ll miss them, but come spring all those eggs will be hatching and we’ll have little spiderlings in the garden again.
