The Interesting Tale of the Spider, I Mean Bird, and the Fly
At least once a week, I try to go out and take photos of the birds that come to my feeding station. I’ve written about Momma and Poppa cardinal several times since they are regulars and have been for awhile. One of the things I love about having Momma and Poppa around is watching them when they bring their fledglings to the feeding station. This one was from the last clutch of the year and had pretty much outgrown the constant begging stage and was feeding himself pretty well. On this particular morning he had been eating, when he spotted a little house fly that was also there. He seemed fascinated by it, and watched it carefully as it crawled around, probably hoping I’d left out some fruit or vegetable scraps. The young bird completely quit eating and just stared at the fly as if he’d never seen one before. It seemed like several minutes, but I’m sure it was actually about 30 seconds or so before the fly took off and the bird when back to his meal. It was an interesting encounter to watch and I was very pleased that the photo that I thought to take shortly before the fly left, actually came out well. Young animals, like young people, are often fascinated by things that as adults we take for granted. It almost always leads to entertaining situations.
