Silly Young Animals Can be Quite Amusing When Behaving Badly
During my last trip out to Cedar Key to try to find flamingos, I also ran across quite a few brown pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis). At one point I was watching a small group that were hanging around one of the boat docks. Most of them were just hanging out quietly enjoying the afternoon sun and waiting for the fishing boats to return for the afternoon. There were two juveniles that just kept harassing each other, though. One would get up on the beach and start to relax and the other would run over and pester him. They would go through some head throwing and biting at each other and then settle down side by side even though there was plenty of space that they didn’t need to. After a few minutes of being quiet, one or the other would start the whole thing all over again. The other birds that were perched nearby just watched the whole display, and I could swear that I saw one rolling it’s eyes and shaking it’s head at one point (not really, but they obviously felt that the youngsters were wasting time and energy). I really loved watching the whole group and stayed for about half an hour just enjoying the antics.
