Long Legged Flies are Pretty and Helpful
Now that fall is here, the little long legged flies (Condylostylus patibulatus) have returned. I had never seen them before last year and I thought it might have been because last year was pretty wet. But this year has been unusually dry and they’re still here, so I guess I have to chalk it up to my never noticing before. They are pretty small, and although they aren’t shy, they don’t seem to bother with people much. Their pretty golden bronze color makes them very attractive and they eat small insects like mites and aphids. Sometimes they also feed on nectar, so they’re even minor pollinators. If ever there was a fly to love, this is the one!
