I Really Do Love My Frogs
The extra rain that came with Hurricane Idalia has been helpful with our fall wildflowers and thus our fall pollinators, but it has also brought in more frogs. Most summers I have quite a few of the little green tree frogs living here, but this year they’ve been few and far between. Until the other morning I hadn’t seen an American bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeianus) around here all summer. Normally there are several that live in my pond, and sometimes one that makes itself at home in the turtle pond. So needless to say, I was very pleasantly surprised when I saw this guy sunning himself the other morning. I have a long piece of plastic that I have placed in the pond so that if anything falls in, it can climb out. Apparently it also makes a great perch for sunbathing. He’s not very big for this late in the year, but he’s a lot better than nothing. Since the storm there have also been two really tiny tree frogs hanging out on my bathroom window every night to hunt the bugs that the light attracts. It’s so nice to be seeing frogs again. Hopefully, next summer things will be better, because I have really missed my frogs.
