Altica Beetles are a Wonderful Metallic Blue in the Afternoon

One afternoon back in April, I found a bunch of these pretty little Altica beetles (Altica spp) crawling around and eating the the leaves on some of the beeblossom plants out by my mailbox. These beetles are quite small, so getting some shots of them was definitely a job for the macro lens. These little beetles are a colorful cobalt blue that almost glows when the sun hits them. It was that shiny color that first made me notice them, actually. There were quite a few of these little guys crawling all around on several of the plants, and as I got to shooting photos I came to realize that most of my photos feature one of what ever I am shooting. So on this shoot I made a point of trying to capture multiples.

Shooting multiple beetles wasn’t at all difficult since there were plenty of them and they were very active. They seemed to be involved in one of two activities; either eating or mating. I actually spent quite a bit of time just watching them, even after I quit taking photos. All that activity was really interesting and honestly more entertaining than most movies or television.
