Despite a Dry Spring Many Local Plants are Doing Great
Up until about two weeks ago the weather here in north central Florida has been pretty dry. The result has been that we’ve been seeing more of our drought tolerant vegetation and less of our rain dependent species. Over the course of the last couple weeks we’re starting to get back into our regular summer pattern of afternoon thunderstorms and we’re also seeing some of our summer flowers beginning to bloom as well. One of my favorite late spring to early summer plants is lamb’s tongue (Plantago lanceolata) or ribwort plantain. It’s actually an herb, but it looks more like a grass to me. This is one of it’s flower stalks with soon to open flowers. Again, I think it’s the colors and textures that I find so attractive. On this particular specimen, I also love the way it caught the afternoon light.
