The Southern Dewberry is Another Wonderful Spring Flower

The spring flowers are everywhere now, popping up left and right every day. One of the prettiest ones, in my opinion, is the southern dewberry (Rubus trivialis). In it’s prime, it’s a striking white flower with a beautiful center area. The flowers aren’t very long lived and rapidly become a colorful fruit. As expected, the fruit starts off green, then becomes red, and finally purple when it’s ripe. It looks like a raspberry or a blackberry and tastes similar to a blackberry. I’ve been told it’s best in either a pie or in jam, but I like them raw and unsweetened. Many people consider them weeds and don’t care for their thorny stems, but I welcome them every year. What’s a few thorns when there are gorgeous flowers and delicious fruit?
