Pine Tree Bark has Fantastic Texture and is Quite Colorful
Wood is one of my favorite things to photograph because it frequently has lots of interesting textures and colors. And, of course, different woods have different textures and colors, which makes it all the more interesting. Often when I take pictures of wood it is either cut, broken, or somehow polished, but barks are also pretty cool. Like the wood itself, each type of tree has a different color bark with it’s own type of texture. The bark of the longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) is one of my all time favorites. It’s flaky and deeply grooved texture is never the same, and healthy trees usually have quite a few colors ranging from a rich golden brown to an almost bluish grey. This tree is a prime example. It’s one of the many that grow in the Gothe State Forest just behind my house. It’s an older tree that is quite tall and nicely branched and seems to be in prime health. Trees like this are not only gorgeous, but they also provide shelter and food for much of the wildlife in the area. Pines are even good at cleaning the air, and the longleaf is one of the best trees for lumber (unfortunately, that lead to its near extinction in much of the southern United States).
