Can You Soar the Whole Way to the Moon?
Not long ago I spent some time one afternoon photographing the vultures near my office soaring on the thermals. It was a warm, pleasant afternoon and the birds were enjoying it just as much as I was. Vultures are large birds with wide wing spans and heavy bodies. When they fly, if the weather is right, they love to catch thermals that can lift them up pretty high in the sky with very little effort. They have keen eyesight and many of them also have an incredible sense of smell. When they soar, they use the height to search for food sources, but they also just seem to enjoy doing it. This particular black vulture (Coragyps atratus) was one of several that was high up in the sky as the afternoon moon became visible. I liked the concept (even if it really isn’t possible) of a bird being able to soar up to the moon, which is what this one appeared to be attempting.
