Rose Natal Grass is Beautiful When Blowing in the Wind
Like most of the rest of the United States, we in central Florida are suffering from unusually cold weather thanks to Winter Storm Elliot. We’ve been having lows in the 20’s and highs in only the 30’s and 40’s for the past few days. Other have been much, much colder, though, so I can’t complain. Just before the cold weather came along it was actually very nice outside, and one morning when I was walking a dog, I noticed this rose natal grass (Melinus repens) behind our office blowing in a gentle breeze. The morning sun was catching the seed heads as they moved with the breeze and making them shine. It was also really bringing out their bright red color. After I took a couple photos of the stand of grass, I decided to get some of the seeds themselves, too. Grass seeds tend to be pretty colorful interestingly shaped or covered in hairs, so I’m always fascinated by them. I’m sure all the grass is now dead due to multiple frosts over the holiday weekend, but it was quite pretty while it lasted.
