The Beautiful Purple Love Grass Makes a Colorful Mist
Late summer and fall are flowering and seeding times for many grasses. One of my favorites is purple love grass (Eragrostis spectabilis) due to brilliant reddish purple flowers. It is also known as lovegrass, spectacular lovegrass, purple plains lovegrass, tumblegrass, and petticoat climber. The grass tends to grow in clusters and when a bunch of clusters flower at once they produce a colorful, mist-like area of purplish pink over the tops of the plants. If there is a lot of lovegrass in a field, it can turn the whole field pink. One of my neighbors has a lot of purple lovegrass growing on his property and I adore driving by when it’s in bloom. I had stopped to photograph it from the road several times, but this year some had spread past his fence, so I decided to get some closeups. It was very difficult to get the camera to focus the way I wanted it to, but although this wasn’t at all the image I had in mind, I’m very happy with it. It definitely has an artistic feel to it that I really like.
