The Beautiful Marsh Bristlegrass Produces Colorful Fall Seeds
Every fall, before they die back for winter, most of our grasses produce their seeds. Some are just bland brown or black seeds, but others are quite colorful and attractive. One of the really striking ones is marsh bristlegrass (Setaria parviflora), also known as bristly foxtails, yellow bristlegrass, or knotroot bristlegrass. It’s one of several types of bristlegrasses that grow in this area. As you can see, the seeds start out green and slowly turn to red, then black as they mature. The really attractive part, though, are the colorful red, green, and yellow bristles that surround the seeds. When you pass a field full of this grass, you see a reddish haze at the top of the grass that’s very pretty.
