The Summer Heat and Precipitation Lead to Beautiful Mushrooms
Late summer in central Florida is characterized by afternoon and evening thunderstorms just about every day. These storms are the result of the heat and humidity that this area is well known for. This same heat and humidity also creates the perfect conditions for lots of kinds of fungi. I’m most definitely not an expert on fungi, but I do find many of them quite beautiful. I try to take advantage of this time of the year to capture some of them photographically. One afternoon I drove through the pouring rain to get home, and by the time I made it, the sky had cleared (not atypical for these storms). I took advantage of everything being wet and tried to get some pictures of a bunch of the plants, flowers, and yes, mushrooms, while they were still wet from the rain. I found this very pretty rosy russula (Russula sanguinea) that had a puddle of water in the cap that was slowly dripping off the side. I really like the way the water droplet reflects the surrounding woody terrain.
