A Colorful and Curious Great Blue Skimmer

I had a fantastic time the other day with this beautiful male great blue skimmer (Libellula vibrans). I had already put the dogs out for their afternoon walk, so I wasn’t planning to take any pictures. I had gone around behind the dog house to check on the passion fruit vines when I noticed the skimmer patrolling the area. Of course, the dogs had followed me, and their running around scared it off a couple of times, but it kept coming back to one of three perches. It was hot, so the dogs settled down pretty quickly and I took the opportunity to take a few shots. At first the skimmer didn’t want me getting too close, either, but I guess it realized I didn’t intend to harm it (can an insect even think like that? I don’t know). Probably more likely that it just got used to me, but either way, it allowed me to take some nice macro photographs. This one was my favorite. I love the way the head is cocked with a curious attitude. Again, being an insect, it’s probably not capable of feeling curiosity. It’s probably simply readjusting it’s focus, but I like the curiosity idea better, so that’s what I’m going with.
