Even the Smallest of Flowers Can be Incredibly Colorful
Summertime in Florida means, hot weather, afternoon rains, and an amazing variety of wildflowers. They literally come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. One of my favorites is pink purslane (Portulaca pilsoa), also known as hairy pigweed, kiss-me-quick, or shaggy portulaca. It’s a native to the southern United States, the Caribbean, Central America, and parts of South America. It loves direct sun, can tolerate drought, and grows well in poor soils. It makes a great ground cover since it only grows to 3-4 inches high, but it spreads out to over a foot wide. The best part, though, by far are the pretty, little pink flowers. They may be small, but they sure make up for it with their bright color. We have a bunch of it growing in our play yards at work and I see it frequently when I am hiking in the sandhills. I have considered trying to plant it in my yard, but it really is too shaded. I can still admire the colors, though.
