Eastern Grey Squirrels are Bright and Agile Little Animals
A lot of people feed the wild birds, and many of them really hate it when squirrels come around and eat the bird food. Inventors are always looking for ways to make a better feeder that the squirrels can’t get to, but they are pretty innovative little creatures themselves. They are also amazingly acrobatic, so there is very little that will keep them away if they put their minds to it. I’m not one of those people who minds having the squirrels around, so I don’t care if they eat some of the bird food. I make sure there is enough for them and for the birds each day. My next door neighbor also feeds the wild things, so it’s not terribly surprising when I see Eastern grey squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis) running around in the woods behind my house. I frequently walk through the back of my property out into the Gothe State Forest. The afternoon I took this image I was out there and came across this little guy down in the leaves. He was very intent on something down there, but based on the way he was stretching out, he was nervous. All that concentration allowed me to get pretty close before I took this shot. It was the one and only, because the shutter noise really scared him, and he zipped up the nearest tree. I waited a few minutes to see if he would come back down, but he just sat up there cussing me out in squirrel chatter, so I continued on my way and left him to go about his business.
