Carpenter Ants are Really Cool Because They are Great Farmers
Carpenter ants are very common here in north central Florida, and I see them all over the place in most of the habitats I’ve visited. They show up fairly frequently in my photos. Most of the time that’s on purpose, but several times I’ve only discovered them when I went to edit the images. Carpenter ants can and will bite, but if you don’t pester them too much, they will usually leave you alone, too. I had read about how they will sometimes farm aphids, but I had never seen it before I found this group one afternoon in the summer grape vines. I think that “herding“ might be a better term than ”farming” since they aren’t growing the aphids like plants, but they do keep them together and protect them from other predators. Occasionally they will harvest some for food, just like human beings do with many of our livestock animals. It was very interesting to watch the ants move their charges around. I actually took quite a few photos and several videos, and spent much more time just watching them. Hope you enjoy watching them, too!
