Five Lined Skinks are Active and Exciting Summer Reptiles
A little while back, I came home and found the first fence lizard that I had seen in two years (I’ve since seen it several more times, so I think it’s here to stay!). It was up in the live oak tree that is built into my front deck, and it was running around one of the big branches along with this five lined skink (Plestiodon fasciatus). I actually think they were each trying to avoid the other, but whatever they were doing, it was entertaining to watch! It also provided some nice photo opportunities. I had actually hoped to manage to catch them both in one image, but they really avoided getting close enough to each other. Five lined skinks are pretty common in the eastern United States and the eastern portion of southern Canada. In fact, they are one of only seven species of lizards that are native to Canada.
