It is Surprising What Springs Up After a Good Rain

This photo is actually from last summer after we had a couple of tropical storms blow through and dump a lot of rain on us. Even before the rains had stopped mushrooms were popping up everywhere. There were quite a few varieties, too. This one showed out really well against the bed of old leaves where it was growing due to it’s bright sunny color. Despite it’s pretty appearance, this mushroom, a golden waxcap (Hygrocybe flavescens), is highly toxic. The cap is covered in a sticky, waxy substance that can even be toxic if you get it on your hands and put your hands in your mouth or touch food before washing your hands. This one was growing under some of the oaks in my front yard. Quite attractive, but definitely a touch me not!
