Caterpillars Have Weird, Cool Little Gripping Feet
I took this last summer when there were zebra longwing and gulf fritillary (brushfooted butterflies) caterpillars all over the passion fruit vines. I had only had my macro lens for about a month, so I was taking photos of anything and everything I could with it. Many (and I do mean many!) of those were throw always, but I kind of liked this one. I had never really looked at caterpillar feet close up before, and I thought they were pretty cool. I especially liked the symmetry in this photo on the narrow tip of the leaf. I was hoping to try again this year now that I’m more experienced with the macro lens, but our spring drought put the passion fruit vines way behind (they won’t produce any fruit this year), and I think it killed a lot of the spring caterpillars because there aren’t that many butterflies this year, either. Tell me what you think. I’d love your input!
