The ovenbirds (Seiurus aurocapilla) are back! If you’ve read any of my earlier fall or winter posts, you probably know that one of my all time favorite birds are the ovenbirds. They are attractive little warblers that breed in the northern United States well into Canada, but winter in Florida, the Caribbean, and Central America. They are usually one of our first migrants to arrive. They tend to be shy and secretive and very good natured. I think it’s mostly that quiet disposition that I find so attractive. I had actually seen a couple of single birds deep in the woods a couple of weeks ago, but it was pretty obvious that they weren’t staying long. Today, though, I saw three different birds, all of whom seemed very comfortable here, and one even came out of the woods and helped itself to some meal worms. The other two were foraging in the brush along side the driveway. All of them behaved very confidently as though they are going to be living here for a while. The ovenbirds are always a welcome sight to me, especially the first ones of every fall.
