Sometimes Bird Watching is Just Silly Fun

Bird watching is always fun and interesting. Even when going to the same places and seeing the same birds, you never know what will happen on any given day. You may get to see a new species or witness an interesting or unusual behavior. It’s also very interesting to watch courtship behaviors in the spring, parenting in the summer, and migration in the fall. These are just a few of the intellectual reasons that I enjoy birding, but sometimes I enjoy the silliness of the animals, or I get a good laugh over something. That’s what happened the day I took this shot of a pretty female northern cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis). She was up in the pokeberry bushes and had been enjoying some of the ripe fruit. When she took a break and looked up, there was a red smudge on the tip of her beak. It reminded me of someone who had just been kissed by someone else who was wearing bright red lipstick. I’m not sure which thought contributed to my chuckle more; the thought of two birds kissing (they do sometimes feed each other, though), or the thought of a bird wearing lipstick. And yes, it’s okay if you find my sense of humor a little odd. Sometimes I feel that way myself.
