It has been great fun seeing so many ruby throated hummingbirds (Archilochus colubris) since I stopped using commercial hummingbird food and went to a sugar and water formula. There are quite a few birds coming to both feeding stations, and they are coming repeatedly any time that I’m out watching birds. I always know when there is a hummingbird around because their rapidly moving wings make a buzzing sound like that of a bee. Hummingbirds are larger than bees, so the sound is louder and it’s very distinctive. Most birds tell us that they’re around with their voices, but hummingbirds do it a bit differently. In some respects I like the buzzing better. Birds that aren’t singing or calling can sometimes sneak right past us, but a hummingbird really can’t.
