Colorful Blue Jays Love to Play With Their Food

There are plenty of birders who don’t really like having blue jays (Cyanocitta cristata) around since they have a reputation for being bullies. At my house everyone is welcome. I have not had any problems with aggression in the blue jays and I find them very interesting to watch. I love listening to their various calls (today one was mimicking a northern flicker) and to watch their antics. It’s nesting season right now and male birds are coming to the feeding station and filling up on food for their mates and offspring. They grab seeds and mealworms, toss them into the air and swallow them down. Every once in a while they miss, but it never seems to phase them. It seems to be partly a game with them since I have also watched them play with caterpillars and other insects that they have caught. I think if you’re a blue jay a good bit of the world is a toy, but didn’t your mother ever tell you not to play with your food?!?
