Northern Parulas are One of Floridas Most Colorful Birds

If you really enjoy colorful birds, then the warbler family is one of the best. Some of them, especially the females, can be fairly plain looking, but an awful lot of them are quite colorful. They are small passerine birds that tend to be very active, so to see them you need to look up into the trees for color and movement. Movement is especially important since, even though they are brightly colored, they blend into the foliage remarkably well. One of the prettiest warblers we have around here are the northern parulas (Setophaga americana). They have a slate blue back with hints of yellowish green, a dark yellow throat, and a lighter yellow breast that fades to white. The colors just really work well together to create a very striking individual. Fortunately for us, they nest and breed in north central Florida, so if you’re out in a wooded area, watch those trees, and hopefully you’ll be able to spot one of these little beauties.
