Little Downy Woodpeckers are Beautiful in Flight

The cute little downy woodpeckers (Dryobates pubescens) have been very active lately, and yesterday I had a beautiful pair of them hunting in the trees around the feeding station. As I have stated before, these little birds are very active and quickly move from branch to branch and tree to tree in their endless search for insects. This pair seemed especially busy and I suspect that they have a nest full of hungry babies somewhere nearby. This dead snag off of one of the oak trees is always a favorite spot for woodpeckers, so it wasn’t too surprising to see the female up there digging for bugs. In typical downy woodpecker style, one minute she was hunting in the cracks and crevices, and the next minute she was on her way to the next spot.
