Patience Can Be a Great Thing for Birds, Too

How many of us were taught that patience is a good thing when we were kids? Most of us, I’m sure. And anyone who gets into nature photography has to learn patience to have much success at all. But patience is important for animals, too. This little tufted titmouse (Baeolophus bicolor) was waiting its turn to go to the feeding station the other day. When there are a lot of birds around, I’m always surprised at how patient and well mannered most of them are. Every once in a while there is a scuffle and it almost always involves the cardinals. The little grab and go feeders usually stand by and let them move on. Then they take turns flying in, grabbing a morsel, and flying off to eat. That system avoids trouble between birds and keeps everything generally orderly. Perhaps more people should be paying attention to the birds!
