Beautiful Pine Warblers are Alert and Active

One of our truly most beautiful warblers is the pine warbler (Setophaga pinus). They are resident birds that live in the pine forests of central Florida all year round. I definitely see them more in the winter months, though, when they are attracted to the feeders and the water that I put out. Like most warblers, they are active, bright little birds that can be cheeky or shy depending on what is going on around them. The males, like this one, are a bright yellow with streaky sides, while the females tend to be a little less bright yellow with grey on their flanks. One would think that with their bright color that they would be easy to see, but it’s amazing how quickly and easily they can blend into the piney woods. They are always fun to watch as they flash in and out of the trees and call to each other in high pitched chirps and tweets.
