Beautiful Grey Carbirds Tend to Be Shy

I live in Florida for one main reason. I don’t much care for cold weather. That said, yesterday was a very cold day over most of the United States, including Florida, but it did bring out some very hungry birds. One of them was this gorgeous grey catbird (Dumetella carolinensis). Although they arrived around here in the late fall, they tend to be very reclusive, and I don’t see them often. They do have a loud call that sounds sort of like a crying cat, and I hear them far more often than I see them. The cold weather brought this one out, though. It was in need of some energy giving mealworms and after eating, it also got a big drink of water. But before it was willing to go to the feeding station, it sat for some time studying the whole set up and me. Finally, hunger and thirst won out, but after its meal it was quickly gone back into the underbrush and its reclusive lifestyle.
