Brown Pelicans are Always Fun in Beautiful Cedar Key

Yesterday was for the birds. By that I mean that I spent a good bit of my daylight hours watching birds. First I fed and spent a short period of time with the birds on the home front. Then I headed into Bronson and then out to Cedar Key. As always, the birding in Cedar Key was great and as it got closer to evening I headed to one of the local bars for a cold beer and to watch various birds settle in for the night. These two brown pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis) had chosen side by side pylons and looked to be pretty comfortable there together. Part of the time I was watching them, they were both dozing off. Notice that the image seems to have an overall sort of bluish tint. That’s because it was cool and very foggy outside and visibility was diminishing rapidly as sunset neared. Interestingly, as I drove inland towards home, the fog decreased and the temperature warmed up quickly to a toasty 76 degrees. Today the cold from winter storm Fern has arrived and we’re expecting a hard freeze over night.
