I Love Spending a Sunset with a Great Blue Heron

Yesterday I had a really great day hiking and bird watching out in Cedar Key. It’s the time of year that there are quite a few migrant birds here, and that gave me the opportunity to see two new species. It was a perfect day to wander around and just to be outside. At the end of the day there was also an incredible sunset. The pink from the sky was producing beautiful colors on the ripples in the water where this great blue heron (Ardea herodias) was resting on a pylon that it had chosen as a roost for the night. As it settled in and got comfortable, I enjoyed watching the sunset and its fantastical colors. This is not the first beautiful December sunset I’ve shared with one of these birds and I hope it won’t be the last.
