Blue-eyed Grass is a Beautiful Summer Grass

During the summer in western Florida this beautiful little wildflower is very common. It’s called blue-eyed grass (Sisyrinchium angustfolium). The plant has many grassy shoots and the tiny blue flowers grow on stems all over the plant. To someone the little flowers looked like tiny eyes with yellow pupils. It’s also sometimes called pigroot since it’s a plant that wild pigs will often eat. That’s interesting because to household pets and people the plant is mildly toxic if eaten. Right now these little “eyes” are growing everywhere that there is plenty of sun. They are a plant I’m always happy to see thanks to these pretty little flowers.
