Sometimes a Funny Photo is Better than a Serious One

This pileated woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus) flew in the other morning while I was out watching birds, and he just had me laughing at him and his expressions. After hunting for some bugs in this dead branch on the oak, he popped out, looked straight at me and gave me the goofy grin above. He actually did it several times, and I think he was keeping an eye out for potential threats, but it was amusing, just the same. At one point he was hunting insects on the side of the branch where I could see him, and I grabbed the shot below. He looked like he had been out over doing the spirits the night before and was paying for it now. In actuality, he was protecting his eyes from flying wood pieces as he prepared to start banging on the branch, but I kind of liked my interpretation better. Both images had me chuckling as did just watching this silly bird.
