Fiery Skippers are Bright, Colorful, and Speedy Little Butterflies
Fiery skippers (Hylephila phyleus) are pretty little butterflies that have a fast, uneven flight pattern, which is why they are known as skippers. They are quite common around here and I see them frequently, but they are not always easy to photograph. When they are feeding is usually the best time. I actually took this shot back in 2021 when I stopped on the roadside to get some images of the lyreleaf sage (Salvia lyrata). The skippers were all over the place feeding on the flowers, so I took advantage and got these shots. I had actually forgotten about them until I was reviewing some older stuff last week. I love the contrast between the yellow butterflies and the purple flowers, so I thought they should be shared.
