Whenever there are woodpeckers around, I really enjoy watching and photographing them. First of all, they are all beautiful birds that always have brilliant colors. Secondly, they have some interesting behaviors and activities. Sometimes they are amazing acrobats, twisting and turning to get into incredible positions. Other times they will sit and preen their feathers for fairly long times. But my favorite thing to watch is when they are drumming or feeding. It never stops surprising me how hard they can hit a tree with their heads or how long they can continue sometimes. I love it when you can see bits of wood flying off from each strike or when they stop to explore a hole for insects and insect larvae with their long tongues. Maybe I’m just easily amused, but I can’t get enough of them!
