This Beautiful Live Oak Shows Personality with It’s Gnarled Branches
Oak trees are very common in this area, and we actually even have several different types. Of course, we have the iconic large old live oaks draped in Spanish moss, but we also have scrub oaks, laurel oaks, sand live oaks, bluejack oaks, and turkey oaks. All in all, there are nineteen types of oaks that grow in Florida. The live oaks are my favorites for several reasons. First, they are by far the largest and they are also the longest lived. The other thing I really love about them though is how some of the older ones especially get very large, gnarled branches with all sorts of interesting curves and twists. That kind of branching gives each tree a unique profile and a bit of personality. In other words, it really makes each tree an individual. I’ve been working on a series of tree images showing some of those individual patterns and personalities. I’m starting with this live oak since it lends itself so nicely to what I’m trying to show. Down the line I anticipate adding not only more oaks, but some other types of trees as well. Let me know you think. Is this a worthwhile project?
