Surprise, It’s a Beautiful Sweet Potato Vine!
Two summers ago I bought a bag of potting soil to repot a couple of my indoor plants. I put what was left out on the porch of the dog house and honestly forgot about it. Last spring a small vine began growing up out of it and climbing the porch railing. It was pretty, green, and began to put out these lovely pink buds in the early summer. It turned out to be an ornamental sweet potato, a member of the morning glory family. I don’t know if the seeds were already in the soil or were blown into the bag and began to grow there. Either way, I’m happy that they’re here. Yesterday morning we had a good hard freeze and the vine died back, but it should regrow come spring. Who know, when it does I might even get it a real pot!
