Gulf Fritillary Butterflies Love Colorful Passion Fruit Flowers
Back in June, we had lots of these gorgeous orange gulf fritillary butterflies (Agraulis vanillae) floating around. Then we has a long dry spell, which we’re just now recovering from, and most of our gulf fritillaries disappeared. They usually disappear in early summer anyhow, so I’m not sure if it was the dry weather keeping wildflowers from blooming, or if it was just their time to go. Now we have a whole new variety of butterflies. This shot was taken at the beginning of June. The passion fruit flowers were blooming and the gulf fritillaries and zebra longwings were all over them. This was one of several gulf fritillaries that were enjoying passion fruit nectar that afternoon.
