Today is the Fourth of July or Independence Day in the United States. It is a national holiday that celebrates the day that the Continental Congress of the United States declared the original thirteen colonies independent of Great Britain and the rule of King George III. The Congress had actually voted to become independent two days earlier on July 2, 1776, but they did not make the declaration until July 4th. We usually celebrate with fireworks, parades, barbecues, and family gatherings. This year many people are also celebrating reduced restrictions and lockdowns.
