Feliz Cinco de Mayo a Todos!

Happy Cinco de Mayo, everyone! Today is Cinco de Mayo, a day that has been celebrated in various ways over the years since the end of the Franco-Mexican war in 1866. It is the day that a severely outnumbered group of Mexican soldiers beat the French Army in the Battle of Puebla, in 1862. This was a decisive victory, but the French did not leave Mexico for another four years. Interestingly, Cinco de Mayo tends to be more widely celebrated in the United States than it is in Mexico. Cinco de Mayo began as a celebration mainly among Mexicans living in California after the war. Later, it became a day of political protests centered around discrimination against Latino peoples. It is now mainly a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage. So here’s my celebration: a Mexican beer and a Mexican flower.
