Colorful Autumn Anoles Really Look the Part with Artistic Touches
Over the fall I found this pretty little green anole (Anolis carolinensis) basking on a tree trunk one afternoon. The temperatures were starting to drop at night, so these guys were trying to warm themselves before the sun set. This one seemed pretty comfortable with me taking its photo, so of course, I did. I always enjoy photographing them because they have such wonderful textures to their skin and scales. In the fall they don’t tend to be as bright green as they are during the summer since they aren’t as warm. That gave me the idea to take that “fall color” and run with it. I used several digital processing apps and then added the finishing touches by hand. I also did a bit of color addition and subtraction by hand just to get things the way I absolutely wanted them. This process is almost always one of experiments so I never know for sure how it will turn out. Once I’m satisfied with a piece, I like to leave it alone for a few days and then see if I’m still happy or not. Sometimes I am and sometimes I’m not. I really love doing these since they not only let me combine photography and drawing, but they also let me stretch my creative legs and that’s always fun.
