Regal Jumping Spiders Can Be Big and Colorful
As you probably know, I love spiders and I’m especially fond of jumping spiders. We have quite a few types of them around here and I’ve photographed many of them, but whenever I see one I still have to try to get its photo. One of the most impressive types of jumpers is the regal jumping spider (Phidippus regius). In my opinion, the most amazing things about them are those big, beautifully colored fangs. Beyond that, they also have eight large, bright eyes which means that they have excellent vision. Finally, these guys can get much larger than most other species of jumpers. This one was on one of my doors and was probably half an inch long (more than ten times the size of most jumping spiders). But like the other jumping spiders I have around here, it frequently cocked it’s head at me, and paid close attention whenever I moved or changed positions. It never acted threatened, just curious, which is part of what gives them so much personality. I think that personality is the main reason that I like them so much.
