Even Our Beautiful Winter Visitors Were Cold Today

With much of New England completely shut down due to blizzard conditions, those of us in Florida cannot complain too much. Still, that same storm system has made it an unseasonably cold day here today, too. The wind has been the main issue, and has been icy cold and pretty strong. It’s not just people feeling the cold, either. This little hermit thrush (Catharus guttatus) was obviously chilly when I was outside this morning. Hermit thrushes are some of the many birds that make Florida their winter home in order to avoid cold weather in their breeding grounds. When I first saw it, the bird was perched on a log on the ground, trying to stay out of the wind. When that wasn’t enough, it moved to a place in a spot of sunlight. Even so, it still had feathers fluffed and just looked unhappy. Eventually, it did get warmed up and did some browsing for insects before disappearing into the brush. I felt bad for the little bird, but it did make me feel just a little less wimpy for being cold, too.
