Silence in the Woods Often Hides Amazing Things

Some of the birds I watch around here are happy to let you know whenever they are around. The cardinals, chickadees, and titmice almost always arrive in groups that are chattering away. Even when they show up singly, they often announce their arrival. Then there are others that rarely make a sound and the only way to notice them is through careful observation. The little oven birds and these black and white warblers (Mniotilta varia) are among those. I usually see them as single individuals and although both can sing, I rarely hear it. The black and white warblers are tiny and are also very active. I usually spot them because of all the movement. Having a knowledge of their behavior definitely is very helpful. This little bird didn’t stay put long, but it did take just a moment to glance at me and the camera lens. At the time, it was the only bird around and the woods were very quiet. It’s times like these when I wonder how many other wild things are actually out there quietly living their lives unseen by us.
